Tech & Desk / Buying guide
Quick answer. Check the laptop’s display limits before comparing port counts.
Start with the exact laptop
Look up the number of external displays the laptop supports, the available resolution and refresh rate, and whether the built-in screen can stay open. The USB-C connector alone does not establish how many monitors will work. Identify the operating system and exact hardware model before shopping.
Check extended mode
Two mirrored displays show the same thing. Two extended displays give you two workspaces. Read the dock’s instructions for simultaneous output and check that the manufacturer explicitly supports extended mode on your operating system. If it requires a driver, check that you can install it.
Compare the whole desk setup
List the screens, charger and accessories you need connected at once. A compact hub can fit a portable setup if it supports every item on that list. A powered dock is worth comparing for a desk you reconnect to daily. Check the included host cable and the power delivered to the laptop.
