How to measure for drawer organizers

Home & Living / Buying guide

Quick answer. Measure the inside at several points and check that the tallest item will clear the frame when the drawer closes.

Find the usable footprint

Empty the drawer. Measure the internal width at the front and back and the depth down both sides. If the walls taper, start with the smaller number. Note any screw heads, runners or stops that reduce the usable area at the bottom.

Make a paper layout

Mark the footprint of each tray using strips of paper, then put your actual utensils or tools into the outlines. Compare the organizer’s outside dimensions and the inside length of its compartments. The largest tool needs to fit within the compartment, not just inside the drawer.

Test closing and lifting

Measure the height of the lowest frame or obstruction the drawer passes under when closing. Set your tallest item on a scrap of cardboard to simulate the tray base. Leave a small gap where fingers can lift the tray. Separate pieces are easier to arrange around hardware, while an expandable tray can suit a clean rectangular drawer.
